Women's Street Smart Self Defence

Every year S.A.F.E Self Defence & Close Quarters Combat run their free Women's Street Smart workshops for communities throughout New Zealand. These workshops can span over a one or two day period and covers a large, comprehensive syllabus. The workshops are fun, informative but most of all it's hands on working with techniques that are easy to learn, easy to apply and easy to remember. The workshops do take people out of their comfort zone very quickly, and can be both mentally and physically demanding for some people.

Lead instructor & owner Charlie Riley's goal when he started S.A.F.E Self Defence, was to make self defence available to females by providing free regular weekly classes throughout Auckland. The comprehensive syllabus taught at the Women's Street Smart weekend workshops is only a small part of the techniques Charlie teaches. These weekly classes allow the participants to learn and practise more and includes modules on awareness, avoidance & de-escalation, rape prevention, ground fighting, knife defence, weapon training and a whole lot more, with scenario drills playing a big part of the training.

The first of the free "Women's Street Smart" classes started in Maraetai back in August 2015, in February 2017, the second free class started in Auckland, running out of the Krav Fighter Gym in Grafton, in May 2018 the 3rd free class started in Takapuna. Depending where the classes are held there may be limited places (due to venue size) and both the workshops and classes are open to females aged 14 and upwards.

2019 will see a further expansion with instructors in the following areas being taught and certified: Hamilton, Rotorua, Tauranga, Wellington and Christchurch.

'streetwise' doesn't make you 'street-smart', being 'street-smart' comes from real life experience. It simply means one has learnt how to take what has happened to them, what they have learnt or studied, whether good or bad, contemplate it, and learn how to improve from it. street-smart is an alternative form of ‘streetwise’. This word has a concise definition of having the knowledge and experience required to deal with the dangers and potential difficulties in life in an urban setting.
